Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. First proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966, this is a day to remember the 69 people killed in Sharpeville, South Africa, on March 21, 1960, when police opened fire on a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid "pass laws." In addition to being a day to reflect on the horrific consequences that can result from racism and racial discrimination, this is also a day to reflect on how we, as Canadians, are working together to build a better future.

On this March 21, let us renew our commitment to shaping a society where we embrace diversity, and cherish it as one of the many gifts of the Canadian experience.
