Human rights watchdog applauds Government’s intention to end solitary confinement

Following today’s announcement by Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety, Marie-Claude Landry, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, issues the following statement:
“The Canadian Human Rights Commission applauds the Government of Canada and Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale’s promise to end the use of solitary confinement in federal prisons.
“Everyone in Canada has a right to be treated with dignity. It has long been recognized that the use of solitary confinement can lead to irreparable harm, and in the case of inmates with mental health issues, can amount to cruel and unusual punishment.
“We look forward to studying the Bill and would welcome an opportunity to provide input as it makes its way through the legislative process.”
