Inclusive from the start

May 30, 2022 - Ottawa, Ontario - Canadian Human Rights Commission

To mark National Accessibility Week from May 29 to June 4, 2022, the Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, Marie-Claude Landry, together with Accessibility Commissioner Michael Gottheil, issue the following statement:

This week, as we celebrate National AccessAbility Week, it is a chance to reaffirm our commitment to inclusion and equality for all. It is also a time to celebrate the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities and recognize the people, organizations and communities removing barriers.

Every single day, people with disabilities in Canada continue to face significant inequalities and barriers that limit their full and equal participation in society. These barriers stand in the way of access to healthcare, employment, education, and information.

Accessibility is about creating communities, workplaces and services that everyone can access and that meet everyone’s needs. It is providing inclusive technology like screen-readers and close captioning. It is hiring practices that focus on understanding a person’s ability and valuing the diverse perspectives that people with disabilities bring. Accessibility gives people the equal opportunity to work and participate in community life.

As we mark this important week, let us commit to moving away from accessibility as an afterthought. Let us be inclusive from the start in everything we do. Together, we can become a better, more accessible and more disability inclusive Canada.

The Accessible Canada Act provides a regulatory framework for accessibility. It requires the federal government and other organizations regulated by the federal government to take proactive measures to identify and remove barriers to accessibility and prevent the creation of new barriers.

We all have a responsibility and a role to play to promote inclusion and diversity. Listen to the stories of those around you, become an ally, and amplify the voices of others. When everyone is included, everyone benefits.
