Outrage and sadness over New Zealand terror attack

March 15, 2019 – Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Human Rights Commission

Following the terror attack at two mosques in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, Marie-Claude Landry, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, issues the following statement:

“The Canadian Human Rights Commission joins the world in shock, dismay and outrage over the news of the deadly attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, the people of New Zealand, and the global Muslim community.

“This act of white-supremacist terror is all the more disturbing as we learned that it was designed to reach the broadest possible audience by livestreaming the violence online.

“Now that anyone has the power to reach millions, it will take new and bold ideas to address the rise and impact of populism, and the pervasive and insidious spread of hate and intolerance.

“We all have a responsibility in this fight against hate, to ensure that our public spaces — both virtual and real — are safe for all.”
