Senseless violence underscores the need for inclusion and solidarity

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the people who were killed and injured in this senseless act of terror.

“Together, we stand with LGBTQ2 people and their supporters from all faiths and backgrounds. Only a few short days ago, the Pride flag was raised on Parliament Hill for the first time. It was an important day for many who have been demanding acceptance of the principle that LGBTQ2 rights are human rights. The gesture now seems even more meaningful with the loss of so many lives to hatred.

“Now more than ever, inclusion, equality and respect must guide our values and all aspects of our daily lives. The terrible events of Orlando strengthen our resolve to do everything we can to protect the rights of all people to live free from discrimination and fear.

“I join people around the world in grief and in the spirit of solidarity that unites us in condemning acts of terror and hate.”
