Stand up for someone’s rights today

For International Human Rights Day on December 10th, Marie-Claude Landry, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission issues the following statement:
“On International Human Rights Day let’s be honest with ourselves — let’s tell it like it is. People in Canada continue to be bullied, harassed, or denied services because of who they are.
“Now more than ever, it is important for all of us to stand together and make it clear that intolerance, racism and hate are unacceptable. When we stand up and speak out, we can inspire others to do the same.
“I have been inspired by Charlie Lowthian-Rickert, a ten year-old trans rights advocate who is standing up for the rights of all trans people in Canada. In a video we’ve released today, Charlie shares her hopes for a Canada that is more inclusive, more accepting and more just.
“I encourage everyone to follow Charlie’s lead and stand up for someone’s rights.
“Stand up for prisoner rights.
“Stand up for disability rights.
“Stand up for Indigenous rights.
“Stand up for LGBTQ2I+ rights.
“Stand up for migrant rights.
“Stand up for elder rights.
“Stand up for families, friends, and neighbours.
“And when you stand up, speak loudly so that everyone can hear you when you say: My Canada includes everyone.
Whose rights will YOU stand up for?
Who will YOU inspire?”
