There are First Nations children right now in need of immediate relief

“The Canadian Human Rights Commission welcomes today’s order from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. 

“After leading the litigation on this historic human rights case for nearly a decade, we see today’s ruling as another positive step towards improving life and achieving equality for this and future generations of First Nations children and their families. 

“It is encouraging that the Government of Canada accepted the January ruling and is open to improving life for children on reserves. However, there are First Nations children right now in need of immediate relief. 

“It is our hope that the Government of Canada moves immediately to action while it continues to work with First Nations governments to identify long-term and sustainable solutions to eliminating the discriminatory practices currently in place.

“Every day that goes by is another day where at-risk Indigenous children, youth and their families are denied the services and support they need and deserve. This order outlines actions that can help First Nations youth and their families, now. The Commission will continue to closely monitor how the Tribunal ruling and these measures are implemented.”
