Traveling the Pathways to Reconciliation
From June 15 – 18, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is hosting a conference entitled Pathways to Reconciliation. The conference, set in Winnipeg Manitoba, is taking place one year after the final gathering of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the release of their 94 Calls to Action.
This conference marks an important occasion for all sectors of Canadian society to reflect on the progress to achieve reconciliation. Keynote speakers and workshops will explore understandings of reconciliation and ways to implement and monitor the steps to reconciliation.
On June 17, the panel "Breaking down barriers in Access to Human Rights and Justice" panel will build on the work initiated through the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s summary report Honouring the Strength of our Sisters and collaborate with others to improve access to human rights justice. The panel will also feature the voices of Indigenous women from the South, the North, the East, and the West.
That same day, another panel will discuss how the UN Declaration [PDF] on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples can be a framework for reconciliation. This is particularly relevant given the Government of Canada’s recent commitment to its implementation.
Although the conference is closed, there are a number of free events that are open to the public. For those who will not be attending, updates, tweets, and photos will provide information on the outcomes of this important gathering, on our website and social media platform.
