Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Human Rights Commission
To mark the National Day of Remembrance of the 2017 Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia, Charlotte-Anne Malischewski, Interim Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, issues the following statement:
Today on the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia, the Canadian Human Rights Commission stands in solidarity with Muslim communities across Canada.
The attack on that terrible night in 2017 claimed the lives of six innocent worshippers and left many others deeply and forever impacted by its senseless violence.
Today, the Canadian Human Rights Commission honours the memory of: Azzeddine Soufiane, Khaled Belkacemi, Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Abdelkrim Hassane and Aboubaker Thabti, and all those who were wounded in the attack.
We stand with the victims, their families and anyone who continues to carry the weight of this devastating act of hate.
The weight is all of ours to carry. Each of us has the responsibility to call out anti-Muslim hate, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate, whenever we encounter it. This is more important than ever, as we continue to see the rise of all forms of religious hate in Canada.
The freedom of religion is at the core of Canada’s fundamental freedoms that define who we are as a nation. The Canadian Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by the ongoing rise in Islamophobia we continue to see across Canada. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to combatting anti-Muslim hate and Islamophobia and all forms of hate.
As we mark the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia, we are committed to promoting a Canada where every person feels free and safe no matter who they are or what they believe.
