Acknowledging Indigenous rights a key step towards reconciliation

Marie-Claude Landry, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, welcomes the announcement made today at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues by the Honourable Carolyn Bennett and issues the following statement:
“The Commission applauds Canada for its decision to adopt and implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within the laws of Canada.
“This important moment in history is a key step towards supporting and rebuilding the nation-to-nation relationship between Canada and Indigenous peoples.
“Canada’s decision to acknowledge the unique and inherent rights of Canada’s Indigenous peoples sends a strong message to Canadians and the world. It will contribute to reconciliation and help to set out a path to eliminate individual and systemic discrimination facing First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada.
“Practical and meaningful change will rely upon a commitment to cooperation, participation and mutual respect.”
