Government must take lead on fighting gender inequality

“The Canadian Human Rights Commission calls on the Government of Canada to fully implement recommendations of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
“Canada has championed feminism and shown a strong commitment to eliminate deeply entrenched barriers to gender equality. But the fight for women’s equality is not over. It still requires the full weight and support of the government.
“The Commission believes that implementing CEDAW’s recommendations, which include developing a national action plan on gender equality, consulting broadly with civil society, and creating monitoring and follow-up mechanisms, would contribute to tangible and continued positive change.
“If Canada is to be a world leader in human rights, the government should implement the UN’s recommendations to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to promoting gender equality both at home and around the world.”
