Steven Estey: A fierce advocate and champion for disability rights

September 14, 2023 – Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Human Rights Commission

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Steven Estey – an unfaltering and compassionate leader in the human rights community.

Steven was a passionate disability rights advocate, whose tireless efforts with and on behalf of people with disabilities, including his contributions to the drafting of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, have left an unparalleled mark on the course of human rights progress both domestically and globally.

The work he has led to empower individuals to fight inequality and discrimination, to educate individuals on the rights of people with disabilities, and to build communities that are more inclusive, will continue to inspire generations to come.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission continuously looked to Steven for guidance and we are grateful for having benefitted from his immense knowledge, wisdom and leadership. He will not only be remembered for the impact of his work, but for the person that he was, including his humour, generosity and kindness.

His life and legacy will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities and the very fabric of the human rights landscape in Canada.

He was a friend and colleague, and his presence will be profoundly missed by all those who knew him.

We send our sincerest condolences to Steven’s family and loved ones.
